gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to words and phrases in order for them to gain deeper and hidden spiritual meanings. The word is derived from the Greek word "geōmetriā", which means "geometry". Gematria has been used for thousands of years by many cultures around the globe, including the ancient Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, and Muslims.
Gematria relies on several key components to assign meaning. First, it assigns a specific numerical value to each letter of an alphabetical language. For example, A=1; B=2; C=3;and so on. Second, it adds up the numerical value of each letter in a given word or phrase to reach its total numerical sum. Finally, any inferred interpretations are then made by comparing this sum to that of other words or phrases with a similar numeric value (called equivalences). In essence, Gematria looks at the numerical correspondence between words to determine their inherent spiritual meanings or connections.
Gematria can be used on virtually any language with an alphabet-based script. The most popular use is in Hebrew and Jewish religious texts such as the Bible and Torah where Gematria is used to uncover hidden wisdom as well as divine connections between various passages in these texts. In Kabbalistic thought, there is even a notion that when one discovers one or more gematrias in a text or within a single sentence in different languages that it holds immense spiritual power - for instance revealing secret messages from God or powerful blessings from angels. Additionally, gematrias can be used to generate meaningful messages out of seemingly meaningless ones - often creating very profound statements about life and our relationship with the divine.
